In Defense of Chevy Chase

Community title.jpgOk, I listened to it. There is a lot of hype right now about Chevy Chase’s rant to Dan Harmon. When you first hear the rumor, it’s made out to sound like Chevy is downright rude, obnoxious, ego inflated and out of line. At first I was upset too, because I am a fan of the show, then I actually listened to what he has to say.

Here’s what I think.

  1. Chevy is speaking from the heart, as well as his head. He’s not pulling a “Charlie Sheen”. He’s  a frustrated professional who feels that his talent and experience is not being utilized to its full potential. Can’t we all sympathize with that?  Haven’t’ we all felt at some point that “we are better than this?”
  2. Yes, his language was rude, but who hasn’t uttered a few curse words when they are frustrated?
  3. He was respectful to Mr. Harmon. Not once did he put him down, or disrespect his work. In fact, he said he thought Mr. Harmon does great work, and loves his writing.
  4. I think he has a point. As a fan of the show, I don’t think it’s been as funny this season as it has been in the past. I ALSO think he’s right about “missing the point”, I don’t watch the show for the romance; I watch it for the comedy. Is it a relationship show or isn’t it? I think they need to decide once and for all if they’re doing” Mad About You” or not. If they are, then Mr. Chase is right. His kind of comedy doesn’t work that way.

I applaud Chevy for standing up for what he believes is right and doing it RESPECTFULLY.  In my opinion, the release of this audio clip was disrespectful an unprofessional.

You’re right Chevy. They need to fix it because if they don’t they’re going to lose their audience (me anyway). I’m glad to see they apologized to you for releasing this private conversation, as they damn well should.

  1. The show is out of steam because the scripts are more improvised than written. Each script is made up of contributions of all the writers who get together in a weekly clusterfuck. Kind of hard to write a three-dimensional character that way, which is why Community is often fun, but rarely satisfying.
Chevy is a false obstacle. Harmon didn’t have what it takes to write for Chevy, so he bailed on the problem, which was solvable, and blamed the actor.
The only major douchebag that ever got in the way of Dan Harmon, is probably Dan Harmon.
